Diagnostic exercise: mortality in rainbow trout

Hatchery-raised rainbow trout were kept a laboratory in Delaware, USA, from 10 days of age; mortalities began to occur 13 days later, when some fish were swimming erratically and others appeared dark-coloured and emaciated. Examination revealed white mucoid lesions ~1 mm in diameter on the skin and gills. The aetiological agent was identified as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. The life cycle and treatment of this parasite are reviewed.
