Experiments to define antigenically Spirometra mansonoides, S. mansoni from Malaysia, Australia and Taiwan, and S. theileri from Africa showed that : (i) precipitating antisera can be prepared to Spirometra spp. antigens in rabbits; (ii) antibody is also found in infected mice; (iii) all the worms are composed of complex antigeneic mosaics; and (iv) the Asian and African worms resemble each other more than they do S. mansonoides.
