The efficacy and acceptability of Depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate DMPA (Depo-Provera), a long acting injectable, progestagen preparation, has been reviewed extensively. The most commonly used dose of this drug is 150 mg intramuscularly every 90 days. Concern has been expressed that the DMPA may be unsuitable as a family-spacing contraceptive since its use might lead to a reduced and/or delayed return of fertility. Our present study is an attempt to find out whether there is a return to regular ovulatory cycles after the cessation of DMPA treatment. Following the cessation of DMPA treatment, the data from six Thai women indicates that the time period for the return of ovulation (as indicated by progesterone levels) after the onset of the first menstrual bleeding is quite variable; however, once the ovulation occurs, it tends to recur regularly.
