Of the extensive research being conducted to develop a nonsurgical method of female sterilization which can be offered by paramedical personnel in large-scale sterilization programs, 1 of the most promising chemical agents is quinacrine hydrochloride. It is believed to operate through disruption of the epithelium of the intramural part of the fallopian tube without alteration of endometrial histology. The International Fertility Research Program reports the following ongoing evaluative studies in quinacrine research: 1) analysis of quinacrine absorption levels through blood and saliva samples from women with quinacrine pellet insertions; 2) subprimate research on the drug's absorptive, mutagenic and teratological characteristics; 3) 4 studies of the safety and effectiveness of transcervical insertion of quinacrine hydrochloride pellets; and 4) alternate delivery systems, particularly quinacrine-impregnated IUDs.
