Misplaced Intrauterine Device Found on Laparoscopy

NlmCategory="UNASSIGNED">A 38 year old woman presented with history of inability to feel IUD thread. Evaluation with a X-ray and transvaginal ultrasonography suggested intra-abdominal presence of the misplaced IUD. On laparoscopy the copper containing IUD was found embedded between omentum and anterior abdominal wall (Fig.1A). It was removed by laparoscopy without any complications (Fig 1B). The rate of uterine perforation has been reported to range from 0 to 1.3 per 1000 insertions [1]. It is recommended by World Health Organization that a displaced IUD should always be removed as soon as possible after the diagnosis has been established, regardless of its type and location [2]. Laparoscopy is the preferred method of removing intra-abdominal IUDs, occasionally, laparotomy may be done when any complication is suspected [3].
