Sterility in female smokers and nonsmokers

221 non-smoking women and 1200 women who smoked 4-40 cigarettes/day were examined in a counselling center for childless couples. An endometrial biopsy, tests for trichomoniosis and adnexitis, salpingography, and information on menstrual bleeding were taken as part of the examination. The results of the endometrial biopsy and the frequency of ovarian disorders were similar for both groups. The incidence of trichomoniasis, adnexitis, and pathological findings of the salpingography were ca. 40-50% higher among smokers. Menstrual disorders were more frequent only among women who smoked more than 10 cigarettes/day. The effect of smoking on the incidence of inflammmatory infections appears to be indirect.
