The Authors examine the role of hyperprolactinemia and non-prolactin dependent hypogonadism in female sterility. Hyperprolactinemia was observed in 29.45% of cases, and the gonadal and gonadotropic concentrations did not present significant differences between normoprolactinemic and hyperprolactinemic patients. Bromocryptine, clomiphene and both substances in successive cycles were administered. Results showed that normalization of prolactinemia was sufficient to obtain gonadotropic-gonadal normalization in 48.7% of cases of hyperprolactinemic women treated with only bromocryptine. In normoprolactinemic women bromocryptine was effective only in 21.5% of cases. The positive response to clomiphene citrate indicates that lack of ovulation in 25.80% of hyperprolactinemic women was not prolactin dependent and this medication was more effective in normoprolactinemic women. The great positive percentage was obtained by combined treatment both in hyperprolactinemic (72.5%) and normoprolactinemic patients (79.7%). It is concluded that the use of an ovulation inductor together with a hyper prolactinemic reducing substance is opportune in the induction of ovulation.
