Cytoarchitectonics of the striate cortex was studied in anthropoid apes (Colobus morbus and Cercopithecus mitis) one year after an optic tract section. The neuronal density in the cortical field 17 was found to decrease in the central vision projection due to a deficit of stellate cells in the IV C layer on the operated side. Peripheral vision appeared most stable in deafferentation.
