Role of catechol estrogens in activation of lordosis in female rats and guinea pigs

A single injection of ovariectomised rats with 2-hydroxy-oestradiol-17 beta (2-OHE2) or of ovariectomized guinea-pigs with 2-hydroxy-oestrone (2-OHE1) was ineffective in priming the animals for facilitation of sexual receptivity, even when a subsequent injection of progesterone was administered. The only facilitatory effect of catechol oestrogens on lordosis occurred when 2-OHE2 was injected in combination with oestradiol-17 beta and a subsequent injection of progesterone was given to rats. These results suggest cooperation between catechol oestrogen and oestradiol-17 beta , but they also indicate that catechol oestrogens, by themselves, do not play a crucial role in mediating sexual receptivity in rodents.
