Carbohydrate metabolism of heat-acclimated hamsters. I. Control glycogenesis in the liver

Male golden hamsters were a control group accustomed to room temperature of 20 degrees to 23 degrees C and a test group from a hot room, 35 degrees +or- 1 degrees , to which they were acclimatized for 20 to 30 days. Liver slices from both groups were incubated for 1 h in Krebs Ringer phosphate buffer. Higher concentrations of glucose-6-phosphate and glycogen were found in tissue from the heat-adapted animals, and less glucose was released into the medium. No change was found in concentraion of other metabolites of the glycolytic pathway or in adenine nucleotides. Of 10 enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, only glucose-6-phosphatase was affected and its activity was reduced by half in heat adaptation. It was postulated that heat adaptation results in activation of glycogenesis, directing carbohydrate metabolism towards decreased heat output and energy conservation.
