A retrospective study of 50 HIV-positive patients treated for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) at the Service de Pneumologie, CMC Foch, Suresnes, France, during 1988-1992, is reported. 29 patients were known to be HIV-positive and 21 were ignorant of their HIV-positivity. The incidence of PCP in the 2 groups was 13 and 6 in 1988, 11 and 6 in 1989, 5 and 3 in 1990, 12 and 4 in 1991, and 8 and 3 in 1992, respectively. 10 were receiving prophylaxis for PCP; aerosolized pentamidine (8 cases) or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (2). PCP revealed HIV-infection in 42% of patients who were ignorant of their HIV status.
