Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed, and multiple smears were stained for Pneumocystis carinii, on 40 HIV-1-seropositive patients with pulmonary infiltrates at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, in September 1987-February 1988. No P. carinii organisms were seen in any of these cases; this finding is contrasted with the high prevalence of P. carinii pneumonia in European and North American AIDS patients.Richard Hayes.
