A method is described that allows the storage of specimens at room temperature for weeks without refrigeration. This method consists of lysing cells or tissue pieces in a buffer containing detergents and preservatives. Specimens were viable in the storage solutions for up to 8 weeks, and DNA could then be isolated by polymerase chain reaction.
