Based on estimation of the labour force needed in the farming, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery sectors, and of surplus rural labour in China, the supply of rural migrant labour is estimated with regard to the total quantity, age structure and sex structure using the statistical analysis method. Results indicate that there was a 77 000 000 surplus in rural labour at the end of 2003. However, there is a shortage of 7 000 000 rural labourers (aged less than 25 years) in rural China, in particular of female rural labour. Hence, although there is presently no shortage of rural labour in terms of total quantity, there is a shortage of young and female labour in rural China.
