Oral Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. A case report with notes on management and safety

A case of homosexual male with chronic lymphadenopathy and Kaposi's sarcoma involving the limbs and oral mucosa is presented. He had marked cell mediated immune deficiency, elevated serum .beta.2-microglobulin and IgG. Antibodies to HTLV-III were also detected. The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) can manifest with a number of oral lesions which include candidiasis, herpes virus infection, leukoplakia and Kaposi's sarcoma. Dental practitioners who may be the first to observe these manifestations should be alerted to the possibility of underlying AIDS in high risk groups such as homosexual males, haemophiliacs and drug adducts. The implication for the dental profession as regards management and safety are discussed.
