Spontaneous Candida albicans meningitis in a patient with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome

A case of C. albicans meningitis is reported in a 31-yr-old man with AIDS. Therapy with amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine and 5-fluorouracil was successful. Due to development of non-central nervous system lymphoma and a progressive dementia syndrome, therapy was stopped. No toxicity was attributed to antifungal therapy. The patient died 2 months later and there was no evidence of recurrent meningitis.
