Between October 1984 and September 1985 the National Institute of Rural Development undertook a mailed questionnaire to study the monitoring of the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) in various states. The specific objectives of the study were (1) to study current monitoring mechanisms used for IRDP; (2) to ascertain the views of officials involved in monitoring work about the mechanisms used; and (3) to suggest methods for effective monitoring. Brief reports are provided on the 10 States which responded to the questionnaire (Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in the first part; Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tripura in the second part). The questionnaire asked for information on: frequency of household surveys, visits by officials and report submission; the keeping of registers and records; the number and type of committees and meetings and the coordination between government departments involved in the implementation of the IRDP. Separate suggestions for improved monitoring in each state are provided.
