Data on sugar production (vacuum-pan sugar, not gur/khandsari) SP and its components (cane produced CP, cane crushed at sugar factories CC, cane area, cane yield/ha CY, number of factories, duration of crushing, and sugar recovery percent cane RP) from 1970-71 to 1986-87 in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and all India were statistically analysed to find the associations between the variables. Reasons for the variations of SP between the states are examined; CY and RP were respectively high and low in Tamil Nadu, high and high in Maharashtra, and low and moderate in Uttar Pradesh. Factory efficiency and CC:CP ratio are identified as important determining factors of regional SP.
