We suggest that the use of nitroglycerin in adequate doses may prevent myocardial ischemia related to vasopressin and may therefore suppress the onset of potentially lethal arrhythmias. In view of the evidence that nitroglycerin may also help to decrease portal pressure, we recommend the simultaneous use of vasopressin and nitroglycerin for the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices, especially in elderly patients and in those with known coronary artery disease.
