Anaplastic small cell carcinoma of the lung in a six-month-old Friesian calf

Two months after a calf was initially examined for bloat, anorexia and loss of condition, it was slaughtered because of worsening condition and hopeless prognosis. PM examination revealed a large firm mass in the anterior chest, occupying one-third of the thoracic cavity. It had encased the heart. Histological examination of the neoplasm showed that it was typical of anaplastic small cell carcinoma. Unusual aspects were: the very young age of the calf, lack of metastases, infrequency of mitotic figures and absence of necrotic foci.
