There were histopathologically analysed 620 cases of lung microcellular (oat cell, small cell anaplastic) carcinoma of the lung accumulated in the laboratory between February 1949 and January 1986. These cases were studied on 633 products, like 132 surgical specimens, 77 autopsy materials, 341 bronchial biopsies, 65 lymph node biopsies, 17 pleural biopsies, and a sternal tumor; the cytologically diagnosed cases were not included in this study. There were revealed the general and particular characters of these neoplastic proliferation at the level of different tissues removed (cellular monomorphism, relative nuclear pleomorphism, mitoses, poor stromas, frequent interstitial and lymphatic invasion, a.o.), the frequent coexistence of combined aspects (oat and intermediate cells) on surgical and autopsy materials, the frequent involvement of hilar-mediastinal lymph nodes, the incidence of visceral metastases. After a short histopathogenetic discussion insisting upon the APUD-relation, there were pointed out the elements of the histopathological diagnosis of these lung carcinoma types.
