The linkage between rural development and fertility depends upon the impact of industrial development, migration and technical change in agriculture on rural family reproductive decisions. Industrial development not only creates non-agricultural employment and raises income, but is also likely to contribute to a breakdown in traditionalism that prevails in rural areas. This chapter draws on the experience of Taiwan but the lessons are considered to have broader applicability.
