The economic development of India and China before 1947/49, their colonial and semi-colonial status, land distribution and indebtedness of the peasantry are dealt with as well as agricultural reforms in both countries after their independence or socialist revolution, hangers-on and profiteers, and the influence of agricultural development on that of the economy as a whole. The basic elements of industrial policy, changes in ownership conditions, and the contribution of agriculture to industrialization are shown.
