The author stresses the benefits of breast feeding as opposed to feeding milk substitutes, and suggests that the relatively low frequency of breast feeding is due to widespread lack of knowledge among mothers and lack of interest and support for natural feeding among doctors, midwives and health visitors. Results from a Cheltenham hospital show an upward trend in breast feeding from 45% of mothers discharged in March 1970 to 64% of those discharged in Sept. 1973; this increase coincided with a big improvement in staff attitudes towards natural feeding.
