Cu deficiency has been shown to produce defects in the structural stabilisation of the fibrous proteins of connective tissues with consequent pathological signs in several species. The diminished tensile strength of elastin and collagen is the result of impaired crosslinkage of their polypeptide chains. The most important of the normal cross-linkages in elastin occurs between 4 lysyl side chains which form a pyridinium ring, joining neighbouring peptide chains.
