Thiabendazole, in daily doses of 50 mg/kg bodyweight for 2 to 5 days (and in some individuals up to 14 days), was used to treat 199 helminth infections in 153 patients. Excellent results were obtained against Strongyloides, Ascaris, Ancylostoma, Trichostrongylus, and larva migrans and results against Trichuris were good if treatment was prolonged. One case of Hymenolepis nana was cured but no effect on Taenia solium or T. saginata was observed. Subjective side effects occurred in 54% of cases but in only a few were these of a neurotoxic type and the relationship to the treatment is not certain. Disturbances of the heart, liver, kidney and bone marrow functions were not demonstrable but must be considered in individual cases with organic predamage of this kind.
