Inhalation of terbutaline sulphate through a conventional actuator or a pear-shaped tube: effects and side effects

In 8 patients with intrinsic asthma, the effects of terbutaline inhaled from a metered dose aerosol were compared after administration through the conventional actuator alone or connected to a pear-shaped tube. Cumulative dose-response curves of FEV1 , heart rate, tremor and blood pressure vs. terbutaline were constructed for both modes of administration. The addition of a pear-shaped tube did not influence the bronchodilating effects or side effects registered 15 min after administration. After the last dose, side effects decreased with time when the tube had been used and after 1 h, tremor and heart rate were significantly lower than when only the conventional actuator had been used.
