The fox (Vulpes vulpes) as a reservoir for canine angiostrongylosis in Denmark. Field survey and experimental infections

Previous reports of Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in dogs in Denmark had been limited to 2 cases where the parasite had been found PM; both dogs had visited France. Clinical cases have been recorded more recently in a considerable number of Danish dogs that have never been outside Denmark. All of the cases have occurred in a suburban region north of Copenhagen where there is a dense population of red foxes. In a field survey conducted from October 1990 to May 1991, A. vasorum was found for the first time in wild Danish red foxes. Experimental transmission of the parasite between dogs and foxes was demonstrated, and it was considered that foxes are a potential reservoir of infection for domestic dogs.
