Unmarried primigravidas were interviewed with regard to their socio-economic status and knowledge and use of contraceptives. The majority were teenagers and were socio-economically ill-equipped to raise a child, although families were generally supportive. They were ignorant of the relationship between sexual intercourse, pregnancy and contraception. Family-planning advice was generally not available to these women. Methods for improving education in contraception and the advantages of the condom as a method of contraception for unmarried couples are discussed.
