Permanent internal migration within Nepal has become a significant population redistribution phenomenon. Two major developments, the Terai resettlement programme and the malaria eradication programme, were associated with the influx of hill migrants into the Terai plains. This paper investigates the consequences of this migration in terms of land ownership and landlessness in the Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts of the Terai plain. The research was carried out primarily through interviews, and the results showed that more migrants acquired land as a consequence of remaining in the Terai destination areas, but the proportion of landless in Terai was twice that of the hills. Many migrant households who were migrants in the hills also remained landless in the Terai. The major consequence of hill to Terai migration is the continuation of landless and rural sqatting in Terai.
