The procedure for producing sterility in women has changed over the years dramatically. The reasons for wishing to be sterilized, however, are essentially the same. Then as now, the desire to be permanently sterilized reflects deep-seated anxiety about the hazards to mother and her family from continuous childbearing. Unfortunately the modern sterilization procedures are not publicized well enough to reach those women who could benefit from it most. The severing of the Fallopian tubes (tubectomy) is currently performed via laparotomy, with a week recuperation period, or via the laparoscope, with about a 24 hour recovery period. The use of the laparoscope is not yet routine, but a major advantage to its use is in making more hospital beds available for more women to undergo the operation.
