The Sample Registration System that has been developed in India since 1964 to provide estimates of fertility and mortality at both state and national levels is described. The system includes both continuous enumeration of vital events and a semiannual evaluation survey of the data collected. The sample design is described, and the types of data collected are listed. Measures taken to improve the quality of the data are also discussed.
