Current epidemiology of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies in Sicily

It seems that in Sicily we managed to obtain good results in Thalassemia prevention only among about half of the population. It is very likely that the reason for such a half result resides in the fact that in Sicily no regional comprehensive prevention program has been carried out yet. On the other hand it is interesting, but unfortunately only from a scientific point of view, that the mere implementation of a qualified center for prenatal diagnosis plus some educational activities and carrier screening performed on a voluntary basis in limited areas achieved a reduction of 50 %.
