The application of advanced technology for extending lives is contributing to the rising cost of health care. The patients in the United States whose lives now depend on the artificial kidney do not consider that the $1 billion required to pay for this service is too expensive for a nation that can place a man on the moon. The solution of this problem lies in further efforts that must produce the required services at a more reasonable cost. Through the cooperative efforts of physicians, engineers, and others engaged in clinical engineering, the benefits of advanced technology can be made available at a reasonable cost.
