In Europe, mortality from malignant tumors is the 2nd most frequent cause of death. During the last few years, world-wide, cancer exhibited a steady, slow increase in frequency which was usually more accentuated in males. Romania presents the same trends but with certain differences as compared to other countries. During the last few years in Romania, .apprx. 24000-28,000 deaths from cancer were registered annually. In 1978 malignant tumors occupied 2nd place in the structure of general mortality. A slight decrease was observed in rural areas along with certain annual oscillations in urban areas. Mortality from cancer was highest in the 70-74 yr age-group among males and the 75-79 yr age-group among females. Regional distribution of cancer showed, for almost all localizations, maximum mortality rates in the west and center of the country.
