For 7 days 6 subjects received lactulose 9.5 g/day. Lactulose produced more faeces (P<0.05) than did diets containing highly resistant or low resistant starch (maize and rice based breakfast cereals with resistant starch 10.33 and 0.86 g/day). Mean stool form was not affected by supplements but was significantly softer with lactulose. Flatulence episodes were highest with lactulose followed by the maize-based then the rice-based cereals.
