Thirty six cases of viral corneal ulcers were studied to see the effect of Acyclovir against the traditional treatment with IOU.. Mainly, the dendritic type of ulcer with the pre-dilection for central area, were seen in our study. Corneal sensation was absent invariably in all the cases. Cases treated with Acyclovir have shown improvement in various signs and symptoms much earlier than the cases treated with IDU. Congestion was relieved in 84.21% of cases treated with Acyclovir on 5th day as against in 23.52% cases treated with IDU. Similarly the symptomatic relief in photophobia, FB sensation, and lachrymation was noticed in about 94% of cases treated with Acyclovir as against the 47% cases treated with IDU on 5th. day. On 10th day, the relief in Acyclovir cases was maximum amounting to 94.73 % as against the IDU treated cases about 64.70%. On 15th day, the symptomatic relief in Acyclovir treated cases was 100% as against the 82.35% in IDU treated cases. Fluorescein staining was negative on 5ht day, with Acyciovir in all cases as against the 23.05% in IDU treated cases. While on 10th day, staining was negative in all cases of Acyclovir as against 64.70% in IDU group. On 15th day, staining was negative in 76.45 % cases in IDU group while it remained negative in 100% in Acyclovir treated cases. Thus, we found that the role of Acyclovir in the treatment of viral corneal ulcer is definitely better and quicker. It takes less time for healing of corneal ulcer and as a result less hospitalisation is needed.
