Effect of oral contraceptives on dietary intake and nutritional status

Weight gain attributed to the anabolic effect of ingested steroids or increased dietary intake is a side effect of oral contraceptive (OC) use in developed countries. An investigation among undernourished OC users in Hyderabad [India] indicated that in this group of women, use of OC was not associated with any increase in the mean body weight or increase in dietary intake. The mean Fe intake and the mean Hb levels were higher among OC users as compared to women from similar socioeconomic status who were not using any form of contraception.
