Following earlier work on infra-red analysis of dicamba (see Weed Abstr. 18: 1404), infra-red techniques were investigated for the determination of aqueous solutions of dicamba + MCPA + 2, 4-D formulated as dimethylene salts. Samples were acidified, extracted with CHCl3 and the dicamba, MCPA and 2, 4-D measured in the 1012, 1070 and 1080 cm-1 bands, respectively. Absorbances were compared to those of a reference standard. Results from 12 collaborating laboratories showed excellent precision and accuracy, with respective coefficients of variation of 0.059 and 0.063 for dicamba + MCPA and 0.059 and 0.091 for dicamba + 2, 4-D. This method is recommended for adoption as official, first action.
