The ecological-geographical characteristics of the parasitic crustacea of the Caspian Sea fishes

A total of 11 species of Crustacea was found on examination in 1977-88 of 4160 fish (89 species) from the Caspian Sea. The crustaceans are listed with their hosts, collection sites and prevalence and intensity rates. Several are reported for the first time for the Caspian Sea. Although the Caspian Sea is brackish, Pseudotracheliastes stellatus on Accipenseridae was the only true marine form and therefore the only autochthonous form present. It occurred in deeper waters and was pathogenic to its hosts. Thersitina gasterostei on sticklebacks (Gasterosteus spp.) is known to occur in both brackish and fresh waters. The remaining species found were all freshwater forms and were present in shallow coastal waters only; they are of boreal plain origin and are pathogenic only under freshwater conditions.
