The effectiveness and efficiency with which a group of structurally related aliphatic nitrogen mustards, ethyleneimine and gamma rays induce genetic changes in barley was studied. The polyfunctional nitrogen mustards were markedly more effective in depressing growth and breaking chromosomes than were the monofunctional nitrogen mustards or ethyleneimine.
