The ultrastructure of the intestinal epithelium of Tanqua tiara from the stomach of Varanus salvator in Singapore closely resembles that of previously described nematode species. Microvilli, a terminal web, a basal nucleus and various cytoplasmic organelles are present. Polymorphic inclusion bodies were present, usually clustered around glycogen granules and partially enclosed by granular endoplasmic reticulum. The bodies, which appeared to be in a dynamic state of flux, may be sites of active synthesis, possibly involved in digestion and assimilation of food.
