The ultrastructure of intestinal cells of P. commutatus from hares was studied and was compared with that reported for P. rufescens from sheep. The thickness of the intestinal wall is similar in both species. The concentration of mitochondria in the basal part of the wall, particularly conspicuous in P. rufescens, indicates that nutrients also penetrate through the cuticle. Large amounts of granular endoplasmic reticulum in the intestinal cells of P. commutatus suggest intensive synthesis of proteins, which are throught to be used mainly in the production of eggs, which are abundant in this species. This phenomenon is related to the conditions of egg development and localization of the nematode in the lungs near to the tracheal bifurcation.
