Identification of the eggs of a nematode (Eucoleus boehmi) from the nasal mucosa of North American dogs

Ova were detected in the faeces of 2 random-source dogs in Tulane University Medical Centre, Louisiana, USA. Both dogs were killed and 88 and 16 adult capillariid nematodes, respectively, were recovered from the nasal mucosa. They were identified as Eucoleus boehmi. Subsequently, E. boehmi ova were detected in the faeces of another dog in the Tulane University Medical Centre, and adults have been found in the nasal sinuses of 2 dogs in Wisconsin. It is considered that E. boehmi is an established, although unrecognized, parasite of dogs in the USA.
