Immunohistochemical methods using monoclonal antibodies were employed to semiquantitatively assess levels of B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocyte subpopulations (suppressors and helpers) in 12 moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas, five tubular adenomas, three villous tumors and in microscopically unaltered large bowel tissue. Helper/suppressor ratio was the most important characteristics of lymphocyte infiltrates. The parameter was significantly lower in adenocarcinoma as compared to tubular adenoma and microscopically unaltered mucosa.
