An overview over the current state of scissurellid systematics is provided. The first species were introduced by D'ORBIGNY in 1824, with today appr. 170 described species in 15 genera: appr. 50 species remain to be described. Brief diagnoses of the genera are provided and select taxa are illustrated by scanning electron micrographs. The monophyly of the "family" has been called into question, however the true affinities of the five subfamilies has not been resolved yet. New approaches including phylogeny based on shell and molecular characters, as well as detailed anatomical studies are providing new insights.
