Comparisons of Philippine, Japanese and Formosan strains of Schistosoma japonicum with the Schistosoma from Khong Island in the Mekong River, Southern Laos, and the fact that the intermediate host of the last-name is Lithoglyphosis aperta (and not Oncomelania) lead the author to suggest the possibility that the Mekong schistosome may be a separate species.
