Reports a study in one stand each of P. nigra var. caramanica, Fagus orientalis and Quercus dschorochensis, 41-53 years old, in the Belgrad forest near Istanbul, Turkey. A sheet of wire mesh was placed over each layer of litter before the next leaf fall. The morphology (pedology) and chemical composition of the litters were determined. Oak leaves were transformed into mull within 4 years, whereas the other species took >5 years to decay (F. orientalis more rapidly that P. nigra) and formed moder.
