Relations between rural poverty and tropical deforestation are discussed and the current commercial uses are described for tropical forest land in Latin America, viz. cattle ranching, agricultural land settlement and timber extraction. Three basic strategies suggested for tropical forests are plantation forestry, tropical agriculture and agroforestry, and natural forest management. The economic (employment and income) aspects and the relative effects on biodiversity are discussed for each land use. Recommendations are made on land use strategies that will combine forest conservation with economic development.
