In this issue, Kathleen Baynes, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of California, Davis, and colleagues report that the centers for speech and writing can be located on different sides of the brain. It has long been thought that the centers for speech and writing reside on the same hemisphere of the brain. The researchers found an exception to the rule when they studied the brain of an epileptic patient whose brain was surgically divided to control her seizures. The implications of the finding are discussed.
